Zipei Han’s practice and research tends to explore the boundaries and interactions between photographic images and various materialities.
Taking the interplay between representation of images and material support as the core aspect, with translucency and visibility as the recurring gestures in his practice, Han is proposing an emphasis on the complexities of photographs as integrated objects that require effort to access, while breaking down the flatness that is expected in an image.
His works take light travels and the sensitivity of the material as variables to push pictorial effect into obscurity, initiating the departure from the trusty industrialism in image making and printing, to reconfigure and rebuild photographic images into multi-layered ensembles – images are compressed, reversed and twisted, to become unfixed, fluid and no longer two-dimensional.
